FluffyMany Years ago I lived in Norway and my family took a vacation/business trip with my dad to Spain. On the way there we drove past a castle or fort built into the side of the cliff face overlooking the Rhone River. We stopped and explored a little before we had to go on. Later searching of some archives never produced ay information about this place. If anyone knows anything about it please respond. Hopefully I'll have had time to sit down and write down the descriptions of what I remember, and try to dig up some of our old slide pictures. Thanks... Fluffy
MerlinCould you give some more information about the location? Was it in the swiss or the french part of the Rhône? Was it a medieval or a modern fortress, still complete or ruined? Was it realy built INTO THE SIDE of the cliff or standing ON it? What types of buildings could you see (tower etc.)? Is "Fort Le Cluse" the exact name? If you give me some hints, I may be able to help with your question...

DENThere is a Fort l'Ecluse above the Rhone on the French/Swiss border. There are a couple of pictures and a little information at http://www.leman-sans-frontiere.com/E/Attract/28.htm

The fort is described as "Guardian of the Pays de Gex, Fort l'Ecluse is one of only three remaining examples of French mountain fortifications from the first half of the 19th Century. An underground staircase of 1165 steps links the lower and the upper halves of the fort. Special activities, exhibitions and large-screen video presentations help make your visit an unforgettable one. A unique site."
